The Detroit Department of Street Railways acquired 30 TD 4506s in 1945, following the cancellation of an order from the Navy. Constructed of steel due to war-time limitations on aluminium, this was also one of the first diesels to go into service in Detroit. The power unit proved its reliability by staying in service until 1968, thereby outlasting many gas buses bought later.
