Named after the highest mountain range in former Czechoslovakia, the High Tatras, vehicles have been manufactured in Kopivnice under the brand name "TATRA" since 1920. Since time immemorial, one of the most technically creative manufacturers of passenger and commercial vehicles, TATRA was nationalized after the Second World War and the focus was more and more on the construction of trucks. The Tatra 138 truck was built from 1961 onwards. The 10-ton truck with its characteristic round hood had an 11,762 cm3, air-cooled diesel engine with an output of 180 hp. Typical of the so-called "Tatra concept" was also its central tubular frame and all-wheel drive. More than 48,000 copies of the Tatra 138 were produced by 1972 and exported to over 40 countries.
