In the following year the study of the Audi TT coupe` was presented to the public on the Frankfurt car show. Later in the same year the study of the TT roadster was shown on the Tokyo car show, labelled TTS - homage to the NSU tradition with its convertible NSU Prinz TTS. The positive reaction by the visitors and car magazine journalists led Audi to the decision to produce the study, without major changes. After only three years of development the coupe was introduced to the market in the autumn of 1998 with a 1,8 litre turbo engine and optional 132 or 165 kW (180 or 225 HP respective). A year later the former TTS was presented as TT-Roadster. With its name, the Audi-TT models continue the successful tradition of DKW (Auto Union) and NSU at the English Tourist Trophy, a competition for motorcycles, which among others was won by Ewald Kluge in 1938 on a DKW as well as the NSU pilots Werner Haas and Rupert Hollaus in 1954 in the respective categories.
