1966 Ford GT40 MK II No.8 Le Mans - Whitemore/Gardner Alan Mann Racing team's car was driven by John Whitmore of England and Frank Gardner of Australia. The chassis number was XGT-1, starting from Grid 3, but the race was abandoned 5 hours after the start of the race due to a clutch defect. John Whitmore won the British Saloon Car Championship in 1961, his first year in auto racing , with his BMC Mini Monor. He also won the 1965 European Touring Car Championship with a Lotus Cortina. He participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for 5 years from 1959 to 1966, and in the first 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959, he took second place in the Class. He participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1965 and 1966 with a Ford GT40, but both failed due to vehicle defects. At the end of 1966, he retired as a racing driver
