The Mercedes-Benz O 3500 was the first newly developed bus by Daimler-Benz AG in the post-war period and the first bus to be produced at the Mannheim plant . It was based on the Mercedes-Benz L 3500 truck, which was introduced at the same time, with a diesel engine installed under a hood at the front . From the compact O 3500, a whole family of coaches, consisting of touring coaches , intercity buses and city buses, developed within a few years . With 6049 units from December 1949 to the end of production in 1955, the O 3500 the most successful bus of its time.
