If the name Maybach is mentioned in connection with automobiles, everyone immediately associates this with noble car bodies, mainly in the period between the two world wars, and if in the same breath the body maker ‘Spohn’ comes into play, everyone knows that a very special, extraordinary and noble car is being discussed. The filigree and skillful hands of the technicians of Spohn, located in Ravensburg, transferred the desired designs into flawless and very elegant sheet metal car bodies.

Around 1940, Spohn built a car body for the chassis of a 4-litre SW 38/42 that slightly differed to the standard design. The two spare wheels were included into the fender line and the noble shape was emphasized by fine decorative trims throughout the car.

It is believed that at least one car with this body was completed in 1940 and got to the British Island in June 1958. There it was offered for the price of £385 (ca. 4,500 DM) and advertised as a ‘fast touring sedan’. A little more than 24,000 kilometers were on the odometer. Unfortunately, who originally ordered this car and also who bought it in Great Britain was lost. The possibility that this Maybach still exists cannot be completely ruled out. It is also evident in other, still existing sedans that they feature the styling element of the slightly integrated spare wheels.
